Focus on Youth Services and Outreach

Welcome!

My name is Jasmine Curtis and I am pursuing my Master of Library and Information Science and Master of Business Administration at the University of Southern Mississippi, with a focus on youth services. I hope to use my degrees to pursue a thriving career in youth librarianship, outreach, and public library management in an urban community in the near future. I created this digital portfolio to document my educational and professional journey as a blooming librarian.

About Me

I currently work at a public library, focusing on delivering transformative library experiences for youths and families in Washington DC's Historically Black Ward 7. Previously, I worked in library youth outreach in Fairfax County and Alexandria City, Virginia.

My journey to librarianship began after undergrad as an early literacy educator in a Title I school in DC with AmeriCorps. Witnessing students facing hunger and unmet needs in the classroom underscored their barriers to literacy and impacted their families. Later, as a social worker assisting single parents transitioning from domestic violence shelters, I saw firsthand the transformative power of literacy and education. In both positions, I often referred families to libraries for community connections such as social services and ESL classes, recognizing libraries as safe spaces for learning.

Today, drawing from my background in education and social work, I create engaging learning environments at the library and through outreach. I am dedicated to mentoring youth and fostering equitable access to information literacy, as well as partnering with organizations to uplift communities.
